Why MANORIAL HOUSE Was Founded

Preserving history with honesty and purpose

MANORIAL HOUSE began with a simple belief: the stories of England and Wales’s lesser-known manors deserve to be properly researched, recorded and preserved.

While looking at the wider title market, we came across recurring concerns from customers about exaggerated claims, unclear descriptions and products that did not adequately explain what people were actually buying. In particular, the distinction between an original lordship of the manor and a modern commemorative product was not always made clear.

We wanted to offer a more honest and responsible approach; one grounded in genuine historical research, transparent documentation and a clear explanation of what each product does and does not provide.

A MANORIAL HOUSE Heritable Lordship Style-Title is not a novelty title, nor is it presented as the original proprietary lordship of a manor. It is a separately created modern private Style-Title connected with the documented identity and history of a real manor. It does not include land, manorial rights, nobility, public office or authority over the place or the people who live there.

For us, the purpose goes beyond creating an attractive certificate or presentation package. We want to preserve the story of each manor and give people who share our values a meaningful way to support its continued recognition. Holders are encouraged to see themselves as responsible custodians of that history, with a commitment to heritage, community and public good.

Manors were once closely connected with the lives, customs and administration of their local communities. Their histories are often fascinating, but they can also be complicated. We do not believe they should be romanticised or rewritten. They should be studied carefully, presented honestly and remembered in their proper context.

Our work takes us into local and national archives, where we examine historic maps, deeds, directories, estate papers, manorial records and other surviving sources. Our researchers hold Archives Cards, allowing access to participating archive services, and MANORIAL HOUSE maintains memberships and associations with a number of historical and heritage organisations. These connections support our continuing research, although they do not represent official approval or endorsement of any individual Style-Title.

We also continue to study the history, law and legislation surrounding manors, lordship titles, land and manorial rights. Historical evidence is not always complete, and we are open about that. Where something remains uncertain or unresolved, we say so. We never treat a gap in the records as proof that an original lordship no longer exists, nor do we present a historical connection as evidence of present legal ownership.

Our founding ethos remains at the heart of everything we do:

Heritage without dominion. Recognition without misrepresentation. Stewardship with public purpose.

We believe a meaningful connection with history should come from careful research, openness and respect; not from exaggerated claims of status or authority.
